Moreland, Kim. “Hemingway’s I-Lands in the Streams.” North Dakota Quarterly 68, nos. 2-3 (2001): 123-31.

Annotation

Examines the function of islands, representing a means for reinventing one’s identity, in several Hemingway texts, including The Old Man and the Sea, Islands in the Stream, and To Have and Have Not. Moreland concludes that despite the appeal of creating a new life, Hemingway’s protagonists learn that such freedom ultimately comes at the price of isolation and loneliness.
