Citation

Stoneback, H. R. “Poireaux and Pétanque: Or, Games and Crops, Sport and Harvest, Place and Memory, and Hunger and Art in Hemingway’s Work.” North Dakota Quarterly 68, nos. 2-3 (2001): 14-27.

Annotation

Close analysis of chapter five of Islands in the Stream where games and crops are linked with place, memory, and hunger, arguing that the pattern is a deep structure found elsewhere in Hemingway’s canon. Stoneback considers the memory and garden motifs of A Moveable Feast as key to this pattern. Includes a list of works employing this same image link, including The Sun Also Rises and “The Snows of Kilimanjaro.”
