Contextual Mismatches in the Translation into Spanish of Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises
Draws on communication theory in his analysis of Joaquin Adsuar’s 1983 translation. Points to examples of mismatches where the translator’s observation of external reference is incorrect, his understanding of the language is inadequate, or where a betrayal of Hemingway’s style muddies the textual implications. Concludes that the greatest mistranslation is the translator’s failure to discern Jake Barnes’s impotency.
