Citation

Fleming, Robert E. “Hemingway’s Chicago: The Iceberg Beneath the Water Line.” North Dakota Quarterly 70, no. 4 (Fall 2003): 81-87.

Annotation

Reveals that while Chicago played a fundamental role in his early work, including a few short stories and journalistic pieces, Hemingway omitted direct references to the city in most of his mature writing. Fleming argues that Chicago is still subtly present, especially in “Now I Lay Me,” “The Battler,” “The Three-Day Blow,” and “The Killers.”
