Annotation

Tracks the progression of representations of love and sexual relationships across the author’s canon. Argues that For Whom the Bell Tolls marks his turning away from earlier conceptions of gender and patriarchal love and acts as a precursor to the sexually explorative posthumously published works. Hewson views the love affair between Robert Jordan and Maria through Hélène Cixous’s feminist psychosexual theory, identifying love as a positive lifeforce.
