Title
Winner Takes Winner Takes Winner: Social Darwinism
Document Type
Book Chapter
Annotation
After summing up the “evolving” philosophy of Social Darwinism, Meeks argues that the grain broker’s reading about a trip to the Galapagos Islands refers to Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859). Concludes that To Have and Have Not can be read as a predator/prey scenario in which many of its characters, including Harry Morgan, attempt to survive the Great Depression with its savage competition for limited resources.
