Annotation

Close analysis of Hemingway’s language at the word level, examining the use of and in the novel’s title as well as the novel’s opening sentence and initial scene. Gajdusek argues that the function of the novel’s title, to connect one side with the other, is integral to the novel’s theme of redemptive crossover. Characterizes Hemingway’s style in this work as “highly contrived and endlessly intricate in its every detail.”
