Savola, David. “‘A Very Sinister Book’: The Sun Also Rises as Critique of Pastoralism.” Hemingway Review 26, no. 1 (Fall 2006): 25-46.

Annotation

Ecocritical approach. Reads nature as part of Hemingway’s critique of pastoral conventions, which obscures truthful reporting. Argues that while Hemingway makes frequent allusions to well-known pastoral works such as William Henry Hudson’s The Purple Land (1885), his novel self-consciously subverts the genre’s sentimentality, artifice, temerity, and anthropocentric worldview.
