Annotation
Examines two manuscript versions of an early unpublished short story set in Italy during World War I. Stewart dates the first draft to 1920, suggesting that the later revision shows Hemingway’s promise of one day producing mature war stories such as “Soldier’s Home” and A Farewell to Arms. Notes biographical connections between the two draft versions and Hemingway’s life. Concludes that Hemingway’s evolving sophistication in creating antiheroic narratives places him squarely within the modernist tradition.
