Ashe, Fred. “‘A Very Attractive Devil’: Gregory Hemingway in Islands in the Stream.” Hemingway Review 28, no. 1 (Fall 2008): 89-106.

Annotation

Biographical reading paralleling Thomas Hudson’s troubled relationship with his youngest son Andrew with Hemingway’s own conflicted relationship with youngest son Gregory. Ashe concludes that the novel’s father-son relationship, written during a period when Hemingway was exploring gender issues in both his life and writings and coming to terms with Gregory’s transvestism, depicts Hemingway’s “anger toward and identification with Gregory.”
