Annotation

Exploration of Hemingway’s influence on Ellison’s development as a critical reader and writer. Hochman studies Ellison’s marginalia on “Remembering Shooting-Flying” and “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber,” arguing that “Ellison’s relationship to ‘technique’ was constantly evolving, and the intellectual contexts shaping his understandings of ‘race’ and ‘literature’ were constantly shifting.” Concludes that Ellison’s vision of Hemingway depended on his own developing aesthetics and ideologies.
