Document Type

Annotation
Relies on psychiatric guidelines to examine symptoms of major depressive disorder in Catherine Barkley of A Farewell to Arms, borderline personality disorder in Brett Ashley of The Sun Also Rises, and posttraumatic stress disorder in Maria of For Whom the Bell Tolls. Suggests that such diagnoses not only generate sympathy for these characters but result in a greater appreciation of Hemingway’s understanding of human psychology.
