Annotation

Draws on philosophies of contemporary cultural critic Ludwig Wittgenstein in his examination of the complex relationship between thought and fact in Hemingway’s writing. Berman analyzes how productive thought follows observation in “The Killers,” “Soldier’s Home,” The Sun Also Rises, Death in the Afternoon, and elsewhere, concluding that for Hemingway experiential knowledge trumps abstract knowledge from the battlefield to the corrida.
