Reality TV in the Virtual Classroom: Teaching Hemingway’s Canceled Episodes ("The Last Good Country")
Document Type
Book Chapter
Annotation
Capitalizing on the rising popularity of reality television, Bonds describes his approach for engaging students by pairing Hemingway’s posthumously published story with the hit television series, Deadliest Catch. Draws numerous connections between the two for purposes of discussion, including topics on gender identity, authenticity, and escapism and points out the value of inviting students to speculate on possible conclusions for the unfinished story as a way of helping them to appreciate more fully the richness of ambiguity present in Hemingway’s elliptic style.
