Title
The Tent and the Thipi I: Ernest Hemingway and Zitkala-Ša
Document Type
Essay
Annotation
Compares Hemingway’s Euro-American centered treatment of autonomy (self-rule) in “Indian Camp” and “Big Two-Hearted River” with Zitkala-Ša’s Old Indian Legends (1901) and American Indian Stories (1921). Hamilton shows the corrosive effects of Nick’s troubling estrangement from others in contrast with Zitkala-Ša’s positive preservation and recreation of Native cultural values integrating human and natural orders.
