Relies on correspondence, family scrapbooks, biographies and other resources to reveal the influence of Hemingway’s father, Ed Hemingway, on the author’s internal battle between faith and science. Roos traces the family’s strong interest in reconciling the religious with natural science back to Hemingway’s paternal grandmother, Adelaide Edmonds Hemingway. And surveys the impact of Agassizian science on both Ed’s and his children’s religious beliefs, the children’s access to Ed’s scientifically based reading materials, and frequent family visits to the Field Museum.
