Annotation

Traces Hemingway’s life within the cultural context of the suffragist and feminist movements to demonstrate how he and the women in his life, particularly his mother and wives, were affected by the gender roles they promoted. Absolves Grace Hall Hemingway of the usual blame for the family’s problems while still considering her impact on Hemingway’s view of gender throughout his life. Barlowe argues that, although chauvinist themes are present in Hemingway’s writing, it is less clear that he embodied these attitudes in his personal life.
