Title
From Wharton to Hemingway: The Evolution of Modernism
Document Type
Book Chapter
Annotation
Argues for Wharton's significant influence as a transitional author on the development of modernist literature. Knodt compares Wharton's The House of Mirth (1905) with Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises to show that despite distinctly different styles, both focus on the erosion of traditional values, social status, and taboo subject matter and employ ambiguity-all characteristics of modernism.
