Have to Write a Baseball Story Sometime: Hemingway, the Busher and The Old Man and the Sea

Considers the concept of "vernacular modernism" and the influence on Hemingway of Ring Lardner's baseball stories, which captured the raw, uncultured voice of a character known as the Busher. Peterson turns "the Busher" into a metaphor for a kind of everyman outsider as he tracks Hemingway's mixed feelings about baseball from his early writings and letters to the protagonist's thoughts about Joe DiMaggio in The Old Man and the Sea.
