Annotation

Explores instances of gender experimentation in the writer’s personal life to argue for a feminist reading of Catherine. Strong theorizes that Catherine’s acts are not motivated by mental illness, but by an effort to strip herself of culturally defined gender roles. Complicates the novel’s statements on gender by comparing Tom Jenks’s published ending with alternate manuscript endings.
