Experimental novel interweaving fiction and nonfiction in her reconstruction of the teenage Hemingway’s love affair with Prudence Bolton, a Native American girl he met while in northern Michigan. Cappel draws on biographies, including her own Hemingway in Michigan (1966), histories, newspaper articles, correspondence, and interviews in her account of Hemingway’s relationship with the young woman who figures in his letters and two short stories, “Ten Indians” and “Fathers and Sons.”
