Annotation

Examines Ivan Turgenev’s stylistic and thematic influence, contending that Hemingway both parodied and borrowed from Turgenev’s The Torrents of Spring (1872) for his novel of the same title. Finds Hemingway’s writing reflective of Turgenev’s in a variety of ways, including their representation of nature, themes of masculinity and nationalism, and expression of emotion through character development rather than description.
