Annotation

Focusing on socially constructed representations of gender, Strychacz draws on performance studies to analyze the theatrical nature of Hemingway’s work, arguing that the author’s awareness of audience influences his fluid and sometimes paradoxical dramatizations of masculinity. Contends that audience response to Hemingway’s representation of manhood reveals richness in the author’s narrative strategies long overlooked by critics more interested in preserving idealized codes of masculinity. Examines all of Hemingway’s major works.
