Tyler draws parallels between the authors’ lives and the two works, arguing that many of their stylistic and thematic similarities, including the human need for a hero and rejection of conservatism projected by both onto their audiences, are the result of Hemingway’s affinity for the writing and philosophy of his romantic predecessor.
