Annotation

With this collection of essays, Curnutt aims to demonstrate the complexity of Key West’s influence on Hemingway, arguing that the island did not distract Hemingway from his writing but rather helped to develop it. Laments the transformation of Hemingway’s Key West house and museum into a tourist attraction. Closes with a survey of the Key West literary tradition from James Fenimore Cooper to Tennessee Williams, contending that many authors have portrayed the island inaccurately.
