Title
Mary and Ernest: Too Close to See
Document Type
Book Chapter
Annotation
Draws on selected correspondence from Mary Hemingway to Hemingway revealing their troubled relationship. The letters span the time of their early marriage through Hemingway’s neglectful treatment of Mary during the “dangerous summer” of 1959, and include Mary’s explanation for wanting to leave Hemingway. Drawing on the letters, DeFazio asserts that although Mary was close to Hemingway for many years, she did not recognize his failing health as a serious issue or as a potential cause of his detached and depressed behavior.
