Historical, spiritual, and cultural study examining the popularity of La Virgen de la Caridad as the symbol of Cuban identity. DeRojas discusses La Caridad’s representation as both the Catholic Virgin Mary and the African Yoruba goddess Ochún. Argues that the maternal love represented by both figures is encompassed in the symbolic fluidity of La Caridad, which explains her enduring popularity among Cubans of varying faiths.
