Annotation

On the importance of impressionism, imagism, and polyphonic prose to Hemingway’s aesthetic throughout his life, beginning with his early introduction to impressionistic technique under Ezra Pound’s tutelage in Paris. Nagel draws on passages from Islands in the Stream to demonstrate various impressionistic principles, arguing that they “provide a sensory evocation of scene, establish a frame for dialogue or action, and create a cinematic immediacy,” and thus bring to life the world of Thomas Hudson.
