Annotation
Argues that Hemingway’s love of fishing, cultivated from his early years through the end of his life, had an indelible impact on his writing and personal ethics. Contends that fishing takes on various thematic roles over the course of his career and that his expertise on fishing the Gulf Stream made him intimately aware of the sociological and ecological problems of the area. Ott concludes, “In the end, Hemingway reconciled the paradox of his pursuit of game with a very serious conservation ethic, resulting in a transformation in his creative work.” References to To Have and Have Not and The Old Man and the Sea.
