Annotation
Provides biographical and historical accounts of women in Hemingway’s life including his mother, Grace Hall Hemingway, his first love, Agnes von Kurowsky, and his four wives. Comley theorizes on how each woman, along with changing social politics of the time, influenced the author’s writing. Argues that Hemingway’s later writings, such as The Garden of Eden, demonstrate complexities of female characterization, gender, and sexuality that resist easy categorization.
