Annotation

Lacanian approach aiming to define the iceberg beneath the surface of The Old Man and the Sea. Stoltzfus focuses on three areas: Hemingway’s conscious text; the reader’s construction of meaning; and Hemingway’s unconscious. Contends that Santiago (and Hemingway) wishes to supplant the law of the father, emphasizing “meekness, humility, and self-abnegation, with more elemental virtues stressing pride, honor, and killing.”
