Classroom approach comparing expatriates Hemingway and Ezra Pound to demonstrate the richness and complexity of American modernism within its European cultural and political contexts. Barnes concludes that while the trauma of the era “attracted and repelled them in different ways,” for both authors Europe existed “as tourist ideal and arena of violence.”
