Title
The Education of Henry: Politics and Context in Hemingway
Document Type
Book Chapter
Annotation
Reads the political messages undergirding Hemingway’s stories of the Spanish Civil War, including “Under the Ridge,” “The Butterfly and the Tank,” and “The Denunciation,” as complex and paradoxical. Yarbrough contends that a close reading belies Hemingway’s commitment to the Republican cause and instead demonstrates the dangers of ideological extremism and zealotry. Considers the autobiographical nature of the stories and reads passages within the contexts of A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls.
