Annotation

Details methods for introducing students to the fluid and historically specific cultural conceptions of masculinity and femininity in The Garden of Eden by exploring the novel’s composition, editing, and subsequent criticism. Asserts that Hemingway’s manuscript reveals an ambivalence toward gender prevalent during the 1920s while the published version and some current criticism promote a traditional view of sexuality and understanding of Hemingway.
