Annotation
Influence study. Reads the novel’s thematic preoccupation with the conflict between faith and science through the lens of Wells’s The Outline of History (1919) and Mr. Brittling Sees Through It (1916). Argues that Hemingway and Frederic reject Wells’s belief in a loving God and humanity’s potential for peaceful existence, concluding that Frederic’s continued belief in an indifferent or malevolent God only increases his suffering and bitterness.
