Annotation
Pedagogical approach illuminating the novel’s problematic racial representation by focusing on the intersecting themes of race, sexuality, and masculinity. Holcomb foregrounds Hemingway’s portrayal of the two minor black characters, the jazz drummer and the prizefighter, offering suggestions for contextualization drawing on Toni Morrison’s Playing in the Dark (1992) and comparison using two Harlem Renaissance texts, Claude McKay’s Home to Harlem (1928) and Gwendolyn Bennett’s “Wedding Day” (1926). Concludes with topics for writing and discussion.
