It’s All About a Perfect Drift: Reading the Fishing Metaphor in "Big Two-Hearted River"
Document Type
Book Chapter
Annotation
Eschewing conventional biographical and psychological readings of the story, Grimes situates “Big Two-Hearted River” within the genre of nature writing and Thoreau’s texts specifically. Draws on Hemingway’s letters, diary entries, and key passages in Part II to focus student attention on Nick’s harmonious immersion into the natural world. Among the numerous strategies outlined, Grimes encourages students to experience their own hiking, camping, and fishing trips in preparation for reading the story.
