Teaching the Conflicts in "The Snows of Kilimanjaro"
Document Type
Book Chapter
Annotation
Drawing on Gerald Graff’s pedagogical theory of teaching conflicts, Milligan focuses on two areas of critical controversy: natural symbolism and racial themes. Milligan surveys the critics, pairing their responses in dialogue with each other, and offers ways for presenting the criticism along with activities for students to formulate their own opinions in response to the critics. Appendix features a lesson plan for teaching the story’s conflicts, assigned readings, discussion questions, and writing prompt.
